The Jacket and Dog Pee

The Jacket, is seemingly nothing more but a mere garment to guard against the chill in air-conditioned Singapore. However, it has evolved from a ubiquitous physical entity to one that all at once, possesses the role of a identity-giver, protecter, replacement and threat. Such is the magnificence and absurdity of teenagers.

Jackets are now a tool in which one exhibits part of, all or of his or her identity. (In which case the latter would either be very heartwarming, or very pathetic). Jackets are now emblazoned with CCA names, mottos, leadership board names, class names, random club names, brand names and what have you. Evidently, once you put the Jacket on, it is tantamount to announcing to the world that what is on the Jacket is who you are. You are part of a team. You belong somewhere. Or, you are a consumer of a particular brand or design of Jackets. You are unique. Thus, the Jacket is a part of who you are.

Then we move on to circumstances where Jackets create a deeper sense of identity, where one more person is included in the creation and maintenance of your identity.

We are talking about the attached people.

When you put on a Jacket not belonging to you but your dearly beloved, one more facet is added to your identity: that of a attached and taken belonging. We have all seen the fuzzily heartwarming sights of boyfriends gallantly whipping out Jackets for their lovely damsels in the freezing process. More than just a act of overwhelming care and concern, it also says STAY OFF! I HEREBY MARK MY PROPERTY WITH MY NAME, WHO IS ALSO NOW IN MY TERRITORIAL PROTECTION AREA. It also seems as if guys seem to be doing all these acts of gallantry, so where are the women who are going to mark their property too? But for now, girls seem happy enough to revel in the warmth of their relationships, which the Jacket provides for in the physical dimension, and to sign with happiness knowing that "my beloved is mine, and i am his".

Since a boy and a girl cannot stay linked together for eternity(even though they may want to), like stress and examinations, school and lack of sleep, happiness and new clothes etc, the Jacket is thus the honorable and exalted Boyfriend Stand In. Feeling cold, lonely, identity-less, afraid? Don't worry! I, the honorable and exalted Boyfriend Stand In, also know as the Jacket, am here to envelop you in warmth as pleasurable as my hugs. And, my name is on your back! I have your back! There is utterly no reason to be unsettled.

And finally, the Jacket, is Love. What else would compel someone to make their relationship public, shiver for his fair damsel, ensure that he or something belonging to him is always around his fair damsel, protect his fair damsel by warding off potential competitors and not forgetting marking his fair damsel as part of his property like how male dogs use urine to mark their territory. It cannot be anything else but Love in the exuberantly crazy teenage years.

In conclusion, the Jacket is quite simply, more than a jacket.

This post is dedicated to:
1. Michelle Ng. because she was rather delighted about my idea. and she is a perfect and all encompassing example of the weirdness of teenagers nowadays.
2. Myself, in commemoration of my slack-ness like wasting time on this.
